History

Knowledge and Understanding

At Woodlands, we aim for a high quality history curriculum which will inspire in pupils a curiosity and interest in Britain's past and that of the wider world.

Our curriculum and teaching will equip learners with knowledge and understanding about significant aspects of history. Our history curriculum content is in line with the National Curriculum. 

For key stage 1 children learn through the following strands; Within living memory, Beyond living memory, Lives of significant people and Local History. By the end of Key stage 2 children will have built on their historical knowledge through studying chronology beginning in 1066, Ancient Ancients, another civilisation and Ancient Greece and studies in our locality. 

Local History is also built into our two year rolling curriculum programme. Children will learn about a local study or event that is relevant to Oldham. This will enable the children to experience what it would have been like to live in the past and how that differs from their lives now.  By learning about the lives and significant events of local people, children will gain a greater understanding of how their locality has been shaped over time. 

Through our long term plan there are topics which use History as the driver and there are other topics where historical knowledge and skills are linked to provide connection through subjects. 

The Long term plans clearly show our topics and the Medium term plans show the National Curriculum content, knowledge and key skills.
